Disappointing

I'm not going to go into the details of the book. I am sure anyone bothering reading the review will have an understanding of the plot. I was looking forward to getting hold of a copy and was expecting the story and plot to be well thought out. I must admit Tony did construct a realistic narration which if looked at in isolation would be a believable work of fiction. The prose and engineered sincerity of the main character is quite believable so perhaps when the author produces other works he may be able to build on this. I think where the story fails though is in its situation. The Author as centred the story in the recent past and this is where it falls down. Its ok writing fiction, I like it. Its good writing history - I like it. Its also good writing fiction based on a historical context as long as the history matches reality. A great example of this that comes to mind is Pans Labyrinth. Complete fiction but based in an environment which is historically accurate. The problem with Tony's first work though is that it is obvious fantasy (which we were all expecting from the author) but unfortunately it is also historically inaccurate. The historical setting and actions of the main characters, while based on real people, is very inaccurate and therefore the whole book falls down into a farce. It was shame because we have all heard the stories Tony has told before and he hasn't made the mistake of mixing his fantasy with any reality whatsoever in the past. Lets hope he goes back to what he knows best next time so he just writes his fantasy without any link to supposed reality

You will remember this book

Whether you are a fan of this genre, or have never even picked up a fictional work before - Read these books.

From the very start readers are launched into a web of lies, corruption and the amazing minds of Blomkvist; A crime detective come genius. And Salander; A computer hacker come genius. Together they are unstoppable. Or so it would appear...

I strongly recommend you purchase "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" and have a read. You will not be able to put the book down.

This, the final in the trilogy is just as wonderful, 700+ pages of wit and outsmarting major conspirators deep within the Sweedish government.

Steig Larsson had a beautiful mind and it is a great shame he will never truly witness the effects of his literature.

Don't believe the hype

I was debating whether to write a review for this book or not and waste any more time on it, but seeing as the trilogy is still in the Top Ten of the bestseller list, I have decided to add my voice to the discussion after all. I thought the variation of the locked room-mystery quite unusual and intriguing and found it quite gripping in places. Unfortunately the way to the rather unlikely solution was filled with further incredible coincidences and rather nasty scenarios that left a bad taste in my mouth. I guess the author fancied himself as the male protagonist, the honest but wronged journalist with a bristling sexual energy so that most of the women he encounters during the course of his investigation can't help but go to bed with him. The character of the titular girl with the dragon tattoo is, admittedly, a far cry from every other heroine I've ever come across but is a walking contradiction; I certainly won't bother with the other two titles in the trilogy and my copy will go straight to the charity shop. I'm all for making up your own mind about a book but save yourself the money and get it from the library.

Haven't started it yet (I know it's going to be great) - but am seriously impressed by the bound-in ribbon bookmark. All publishers of hardbacks please take note! This is a fantastic idea which should never have been dropped.

A great finale, essential reading if you're a fan of the series.

I recently finished reading breaking dawn and as my review states, in my opinion this is a great ending to the series, I loved every minute of it, even though I couldn't resist reading spoilers online that gave away major plot points of the story before I'd finished Eclipse.
I probably would have enjoyed the book a bit more if I hadn't read those spoilers but it was thuroughly enjoying to read exactly how everything played out with all of the details and amazing pictures meyer has painted here.

Having read all of the main books of the Twilight Saga (the only one I haven't read is the Bree Tanner story) I truly don't understand why so many people hate the series as much as they do, I am a 26 year old straight man, I do have a fairly broad range of interests when it comes to my entertainment needs, but I rarely read many novels, I still absolutely love this entire series, I don't fit the assumed target audience, but still I find all of the books utterly amazing and I think Breaking Dawn is my favorite of all of the books, particularly the last book of Breaking Dawn.
I can not wait for this masterpiece to be released as a film, even though I imagine the same will happen to it as has happened to the other books in the series, things will IMO undoubtedly feel rushed, but to see how the movie's producers translate the last of the series into a film will I imagine be awesome, even if it's only a fraction as great as this amazing book.
Seriously you have to read it if you like the other books.

Crivens! The Big Wee Hag Is All Grown Up

Like the other reviewers, I adore the Tiffany Aching books. What's different about this one is that Tiffany is (a) almost old enough for the responsibilities placed on her shoulders to save the Wold and look after her 'flock' (as one reviewer brilliantly put it, 'like a medieval Social Worker', although I would add 'counsellor, nanny, care worker etc') and (b) she faces the latest threat with far greater confidence and with a far greater grasp of her abilities than she was able to in the three previous books. She also (and this is probably point (c) actually!) does so without making terrible mistakes. All the mistakes have been made in her past and one of the really big ones is coming back to haunt Tiffany and this time it's so bad that the other senior witches (the wonderful Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg) and some new senior witches (Mrs Proust from 'Boffo' in Ankh Morpork) just may have to kill her if she fails in order to save all witches.
One other reviewer said that there was an indefinible 'something missing' from the book, and I agree, but that doesn't in any way detract from the story for me. I also can't define what it is, maybe a bit of tautness in the plotting?
If you enjoyed the other three books in this series and are having withdrawal symptoms from the wonderful world of the Wold, this is a great book and one you will thoroughly enjoy.
An added bonus for Diskworld fans is that Tiffany goes to Ankh Morpork and we get a glimpse of how things are going for Vimes and Carrot and Angua. AND, as if that wasn't enough, Wee Mad Arthur is in it too, in a most surprising way!
How can you resist?!?

Wonderful

I loved one of the comments on the back cover of this book: "A laugh-out-loud, vociferously angry must-read". I would only add "Unequivocally poignant and touching".
I would give it 10 stars if I could. Love, hate, integration, familial relationships, tolerance, hope... this is what the book is about. A delightful, funny, moving read. Upsetting and uplifting at the same time.

Jackson, Mississippi, 1960s. When racial integration was still hardly tolerated, the respective paths of two black maids and a white lady belonging to the upper class circle cross. Their personal tales interweave and blend, with a project in mind which will ultimately rock the proverbial boat.

Each main character writes in first person: Aibileen, who is raising her umpteenth white child with love and dedication while constantly thinking of her own son, now dead.

Minny, Aibileen's close friend, married with several children of her own, a maid with a soft heart but a sharp tongue which gets her into trouble more often than not.

Miss Skeeter, a white lady with her own dreams, whose unconventional ideas contrast mildly, and later on, sharply with the society and family she was born into. She also wants to find out why the adored black maid who raised her, Constantine, has inexplicably disappeared. No one is willing to tell her.

Each lady is surrounded by her own sets of characters in the background, characters that however are primary pawns to what will eventually happen.

The author gives voice to Aibileen's and Minny's language superbly. You will find a language contrast between the well-schooled Miss Skeeter and both maids, which renders a vivid and true portrait of their lives and views.

This is, in my opinion, a rare timeless piece of narrative, which will make you think as well as entertain you like very few books can. Wonderful, really wonderful. Well done to the author Ms. Kathryn Stockett!

Best yet

Nigella's previous books have resulted in some of our favourite recipes - but I think this one will be the best yet. This is a beautiful book to look at and, as ever with Nigella, is so well written. Can't wait to start using it.
