| Some good landscape photographyI had heard a lot about the books and the film and have not read any of the books.
There is some beautiful photography outdoors in the film, really atmospheric. I was at first concerned that the English subtitles might be intrusive, but they were fine.
The actors were well cast.
The story was rather slow in pace, really a vehicle to stage over long and over graphic scenes of sex and violence. Fine for people who need that kind of thing, but overall, unsatisfactory.
I felt the editing had taken a lot from the style of the Bourne Trilogy, which were far more satisfactory.

| Not a hint of Victoriana in sight!This show is genius, all the way through. Perfectly cast, beautifully acted, and brilliantly written. Blows other recent versions of Holmes out of the water, and rightly so. This feels true to the stories, even more so than adaptations set amid the fog and the gas lamps, because it feels modern. Holmes was a modern man and these too are modern men. Oh, and London is just gorgeously real and not a pea-souper in sight!
It's sent me back to the books, and reading them again I notice even more of the brilliant little touches the writers have included in the show. They're clearly fans, and it is evident in the heart they have brought to this fantastic piece of television.
Roll on Autumn 2011, I can't wait for season two!

| four lionsFirst off, I'm a massive fan of Chris Morris's work. BrassEye is my favourite tv program of all time, and I'll still be watching David Voffov asking Jaz Mann if he can write a "spherical song" when I'm using a zimmerframe. I watched this film expecting it to be at least amusing, but to my dismay it failed to raise even a smile. I don't know what went wrong but the whole thing seemed very sub-Mike Leigh social comedy/drama, almost like if Mike Leigh had been injected with steroids and told to make a film that was a bit 'out there' and controversial. Very pretentious, but not very well acted. The whole film felt extremely forced. I was tempted to turn it off after half an hour, but because I knew it was by Chris Morris I stuck it to the end. A BrassEye special would've surely been the best way to tackle this subject? Sorry Chris, you are a genius but this is a turkey... 1 star
