| .....and then some! This is the type of film that makes my day. Matthew Vaughn has managed to -unapologetically- give his audience a powerhouse film! There is a clique of actors coming out of some coming of age guy films; Role Models, Sex Drive, Super bad etc. - they are unequivocally, Super Nerds, Super Funny- and their appearance here, led by Christpoher Mintz Plasse, seals the deal in a very well cast film. Nic Cage is always a great anti-hero , Aaron Johnson is much sexier than Spidermans Toby Maguire- and the purple wigged glory - Chloe Moretz steals the show. Wonderfully directed with a no-holds-bar, white knuckle affair- action and violence galore, but it's also hilarious- and there, is the rub. Normally, gratuitous violence and swearing, unless you're in a Guy Ritchie film- is old hat- but Vaughn gives us enough humour to make the audience comfortable and go along on the ride and root for justice! Acompanied by one of the best soundtracks I've heard in quite awhile- even a moody Morricone piece for some atmosphere- I'll be buying the film and the CD- a fabulous film experience! Read more...

| Brilliant FilmBefore I'd even seen this film I was being bombarded with negative feedback from others. People said Iron Man 2 had lost it's magic, that it was boring, not as good as the first - the same old stuff you usually hear. And I admit that between the time of hearing the negativity and going to watch the movie, I was a little worried. I wasn't convinced that the movie was going to be 'bad' in any sense of the word. 'Bad' movies in my list are things like Twilight and I couldn't believe that Favreau would really bring disappointment to that degree. But, like I said, I was a little worried.
After seeing this film three times now, I can safely say that it delivers. It's funny, it tells a convincing story of Tony Stark six months on from Iron Man, it has plenty of action (Action doesn't just mean people shooting each other you know) and the entire cast was brilliant. There wasn't a single bad actor in this. As always the visuals were stunning and it is an exciting film.
Despite what people have said the character of Tony Stark is, thanks to great writers and superb Robert Downey Jr, just as funny as he ever was. His sarcasm and ego are just as sharp, rather that it has been blended into the storyline in a more subtle way, instead of having him just spouting off gags every few minutes. With the character of Tony Stark being who he is, it would be too easy for the writers to steer the Iron Man story into 'The Hilarious Robert Downey Jr. Show'. Although this would please the Iron-man-no-funny-any-more crowd, it would ruin the films and cheapen the performances.
The only 'downfall' of this movie, if you even want to call that, would be that it incorporates elements of the comics and the greater Marvel world - Like Agent Coulson finding Captain America's shield in Tony's workshop, and Tony then using it to make a pipe level. To fans of the franchise these will be a bonus, to regular movie-goers it might be an alienation. I would say, however, that the film can be enjoyed by those who know very little about the Marvel universe in spite of it.
Overall this movie really has everything. Anyone who likes the Action/Comedy genre will love this film. If you enjoy good acting and a bit of sci-fi, I cannot recommend this movie more. I would definitely say to make your own mind up about this film and not to take negative feedback as gospel, because you could be missing out on a great time. Read more...

| Great film - love the extra featuresI was desperate to add this DVD to my collection, but since there's been zero news on when it'll hit the shelves in the U.S., I decided to take the direct advice of Michael Basset himself (the director) and purchase it from Amazon.co.uk. I don't regret the decision for one moment.
It's a shame this film hasn't made its way to theaters in America, because I would really love to see it on the big screen. After watching Solomon Kane I realized that I actually like this character more than Robert E. Howard's other (more famous) creation - Conan. Solomon has more depth of character - and he just looks darn cool in that hat and cape. The storyline was compelling, and not counting the opening scene, the intense action didn't really pick up until nearly halfway through the film. I'm not complaining, though, because this made the character of SK feel well-developed by that time. Because Howard never wrote an 'origin' story for SK, Michael Bassett took the task upon himself and created one for the movie. And it was a job well done.
The special features were a treat (various segments on making the film, interviews with the actor and director, and two separate commentaries - one with Bassett and Purefoy and the other with just Bassett). I haven't listened to the second commentary yet, but the first one proved to be quite entertaining and interesting.
Highly recommended, especially for those who love the adventure/fantasy genre. Read more...
