| Wake Up ChildrenI was a bit like whooa no way when I heard the first track cos it sounds a bit like Coldplay and he sings high and I'm thinking no don't go there dude, but wherever he's gone to and returned from has imbued this Win Butler guy with a fantastic ability to put something so special and mesmeric into his lyrics, they are so evocative and take you right to the root of what's up with our culture of alienation where everything's commodified - even the attitude of the modern kids in Rococo. And that's possibly THE recurrent theme of the album or at least one of the main threads. This guy is on the money! Even tunes that don't instantly soar away to heaven like City With No Children In become intriguing and interesting because of his lyrical weavings. I'd buy this album anyway for the aforesaid City With No Children In because it's one of the most gorgeous songs I've ever heard. And I've heard a lot because I'm an old fart.
Listen hard kids, you could learn something useful! Read more...

| Strange vocalsI have every Richard Thompson record going back to his days in Fairport, and have had the wonderful experience of seeing him live countless times.
My problem with this CD is the same one I've had with the last few, and in particular, Front Parlour Ballads. Why oh why has Richard adopted this peculiar vocal styling on the slower numbers? Has someone told him it's how to sing properly? 'Cos Richard, it aint. Consequently three tracks on Dream Attic are ruined because of this, and another couple come dangerously close to ruin. Its a great shame, because otherwise this would have been one of his better efforts of recent times. Still, you get over 70 minutes of music for your money on the main disc, and even taking out 15 minutes of vocal disharmony, you are still left with 55 minutes of excellence.
By recording live, the playing sounds crisp, not anaesthetised, and the band are great. Pete Zorn, in particular, is in great form. The addition of a violin makes for an interesting twist on the instrumental passages.
All in all a good effort, as you would expect, but it could have been oh so much better. Ditch the affected vocals Richard! Read more...

| AverageThis is a poor follow up to the brilliant Relapse from a couple of years back. When Relapse came out i thought that it was a superb comeback with some excellent production by Dr Dre and tight raps from Mr Mathers. Recovery is something of a step back. Recovery is not a terrible album just a very average one. Vocally it's superb but production wise it lacking. DJ Khalil is no Dre and even the likes of Pink and Lil Wayne can't add any flavour to a dull album. I used to play Relapse all the time but i was totally bored of Recovery after about 3 listens. There's a few decent tracks. "Seduction" is cool "25 to life" is another great song and single "love the way you lie" is also excellent. The rest left me just a bit meh! ..the beats just seemed to be a bit dull and uninspired.
Just ok for me. Read more...
