Couldn't imagine worse customer support
I watched a very favorable review of Parallells made by a tech columnist at the Wall Street Journal and decided to buy it. I realize I should have tried the free trial version first.
In the purchasing process on the website, I got stuck after I entered my credit card details--but without any product to download.
After spending roughly one hour to contact their customer support I gave up. It is virtually impossible to get in contact with them unless you enter a "Support Code". However, that requires you to first install the product, which was obviously impossible in my case. I tried the chat and the phone hotline options of the customer support, but in both cases I ended up being thrown out of the queue. Now I have to spend time contacting my bank to check if my card was charged.
This is exactly the type of customer service that tells me I should not give this provider a second chance.

The software is pretty good.
Firstly i should state i've only used the software out of this set, i'm not really interested in the CD's.
I have to say the software is well thought out and i can see it would be of a real benefit. However you do have to bear in mind it's American so it doesn't really understand english. When it gives you a phrase in French and asks you to type the English what it really means is type American. So you have to say 'intersection' rather than 'Crossroads' and there are various other examples i could quote. It's a bit annoying when you're answering a quiz and it says you got loads of answers wrong when in fact you got them right, just because you typed an English rather than American reply or spelling. But you'll know when it does this so you can mentally work out how your're doing anyway.
The videos used are clearly very old and look like a re-run of some late 80's soap, frankly they do they job though. Read more...

Don't let me put you off....
After some initial problems with installation, I've now been using this for just over a week. It has plenty of different ways to access the core material and consolidate learning. Being a 60+, brought up on more rigid learning methods, I have found this makes it a bit scattergun in its approach, but I am sure someone more used to learning in a computer environment might well regard this as positive. For me, though, I've spent more time trying to work out where things are and a logical way to progress rather than studying the actual material, so I've learned next to nothing in that time.
For the exercises for which user typed input is required I find it frustrating that it is impossible to input direct from my own keyboard, having instead to click on individual characters on an on-screen keyboard (for which you have to find an icon to display it) via a mouse. This has resulted in consolidating my knowledge of Anglo Saxon four-letter words rather than Spanish ones.
Having said all that, there's plenty here for the money and if you're someone who is generally happy with computer-based learning then I wouldn't want to put you off trying it. Read more...

Very successful gift
My mother wanted a intermediate/ advanced resource to help her continue to learn Spanish. After reading various reviews, I ordered her the Berlitz course as a Christmas present.
She reports herself extremely pleased with it. She already knew some Spanish and used to teach languages (French, Latin) so was by no means starting from scratch - hence I can't say how good it would be for an absolute beginner but she says that the various features/ programs on the CD Rom are really useful.
